Sleater-Kinney was a strong band that didn’t resort to the usual feminine tricks for getting attention. They refused to, and this defiance shines out through their music. They were doing things on their terms, and no one else’s. Here is an example from their albums All Hands on the Bad One, “#1 Must Have”:

Bearer of the flag from the beginning Now who would have believed this riot grrrl's a cynic But they took our ideas to their marketing stars and now I'm spending all my days at girlpower.com Trying to buy back a little piece of me And I think that I sometimes might have wished for something more than to be a size six But now my inspiration rests in-between my beauty magazines and my credit card bills
I've been crawling up so long on your stairway to heaven And now I no longer believe that I wanna get in

watch me make up my mind instead of my face

Is there anything like this on mainstream radio? No, there isn’t, and our culture is sadly the less for it. Girls today see people like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, ignorant people with nothing but an all-compassing desire for fame, desperately seeking publicity by whatever means possible. I think that is a part of why I was so sad that they did go on their indefinite hiatus. Not just that there won’t be any more of their incredible music, but who is going to take up the flag for the riot grrrl? Are we all destined to be as vacuous as today’s celebutante? I hope not.

If any kind of a silver lining can be taken from this, Sleater-Kinney has left a pretty large catalog of awesome rock music that can be accessed at any time. All the members of the band are looking for new projects. Janet Weiss has already joined Stephen Malkmus and his band The Jicks. And unlike many of the other bands out there, none of the members are dead, so maybe a reunion could happen someday. After all, if The Police could regroup, maybe in a little bit, Sleater-Kinney will too.

And I will be first in line to get a ticket.
